HIGHLIGHTS
GlobalAgRisk is preparing several themed briefs that propose new thinking and offer guidance to practitioners seeking to develop viable index insurance markets. These briefs draw from ideas
presented in our state of knowledge reports funded by The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
This report is the first in a series of thematic research reports on innovation in catastrophic weather insurance that are being developed by GlobalAgRisk through the support of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The SKR examines how weather index insurance products can be designed to compensate for data limitations within contextual considerations and poses questions for further research.
The Weather Index Insurance Workshop (Workshop Program and Summary of Objectives) took place on September 18, 2010, in Cape Town, South Africa, and was sponsored by the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA). Skees' presentation addresses GlobalAgRisk's current thinking in regard to the promise and challenges of weather index insurance and highlights GlobalAgRisk's experience designing and developing Index-based Livestock Insurance (IBLI) in Mongolia, and the El Niño Insurance in Peru.
